                            PC Film (Polycarbonate)

                            Characteristics:

                            The main features of polycarbonate are its ability to resist high impact forces, tolerance of higher temperatures, and high optical clarity, electrically resistant, and ease of printing.
                            The monomer for polycarbonate is:

                            The two aromatic rings in the polymer backbone along with the CH3 pendant groups provide the polycarbonate material with its characteristic strength. The aromatic rings provide stiffness to the polymer chain, and the CH3 groups allow it to form hydrogen bonds with neighboring chains and will not slide past each other easily. The strong inter-polymer bonds also results in a higher melting temperature.

                            The two rings and large pendant groups also prevent the long chain polymer from folding upon itself and crystallizing. Crystallization prevents light transmittance, and since this phenomena is absent from polycarbonate, the film has a very high optical clarity.  In fact polycarbonate has better visible light transmittance properties than glass. The molecular bonds in polycarbonate readily absorb UV light, and degrade over time when exposed to sunlight. All our PC films are specially formulated to include integral UV resistant materials.

                            Like other plastics, polycarbonate is excellent for electrical applications because of its high dielectric strength and high volume resistivity which decreases only slightly as temperature or humidity is increased. Plastic materials are considered insulators, as opposed to metals, which are conductors. The electrons in plastics are more restricted, which prevents the flow of electricity.
                            The carbonate linkage in polycarbonate polymer allows the material to be compatible with PVC and acrylic based inks. Polycarbonate is an ideal printing medium since it can be dried quickly at elevated temperatures.
